As war gamers terrain helps us set the scene allowing us to be transported into different worlds and universes.
Well The XLC hope to transport you to a Sci Fi world with their new Desecration City terrain.
The XLC are a leaser company specialising in pre printed MDF kits and have taken their new Desecration City range to Kickstarter.
I had the chance to take a look.
The XLC kindly sent to Shaggy Wargaming towers 2 Large Walls and a Lookout Tower from the Kickstarter for me to cast my eye over and build.
On first inspection you can see the great print quality on the MDF which has a ruined and rusty look giving an instant weathered feel.
Armed with some PVA glue I started with one of the large walls.
Straight away whats great about this kit is that there no cutting or sanding to do of any kind. Looking at each cut edge they are all smooth and the colour from the burning of the lasers also some how fits perfectly with the look of the terrain.
There was no printed instructions with this pack but Jody at The XLC was kind enough to give me some heads up but to be honest you can't go wrong with this as all then parts fit in a certain place and is easy to work out.
One side of the wall has the print and another with out so you just have to make sure you get the print graphic the right way round.
The base section needs to be glued print side up so you can see the print on the feet which supports the walls.
After less the 5 minutes one wall was complete ready for the tabletop.
Next up was the Lookout Tower.
Again this tower was all pre cut and printed with a grate graphic on both sides of the MDF.
I had a quick dry fit of the tower and even with out the glue due to the great procession cuts of the MDF it fitted comfortably together.
This kit also has a door which if you would like to use it on the tower I would recommend glueing this on the inside of the tower before you glue all 4 sides together.
After no time at all the Lookout Tower was glued and ready for use.
Well that was quick after less then 10 minutes all the terrain was built and ready to use.
Here are some pictures of the kits with some miniatures for scale.
So my thoughts on the XLC Desecration city set..
Well let me tell you this was the easiest and the best looking MDF terrain set straight out of the packet I have made so far.
You can tell this kit has been well thought out due to the way the kits have been cut and fit together with no sanding or filing required and the quality of the printed graphics on the MDF.
One of the best selling points of this terrain kit I think is that not only does it look good but you don't need much experience to put it together.
I feel this Lookout Tower and Wall set could not only be used for a Sci Fi games but even for games needing a prison for example or a camp for a WW2 game.
I was lucky enough to see the most of the Desecration City range at Salute this year and theres a huge range on offer on the kickstarter from buildings such as churches, plasma generators, line of sight blocking terrain to large hex buildings.
One of the bits of terrain that caught my eye at Salute was the gates which allow you to slide doors open and shut. I instantly thought of ideas for games where these could be used.
The XLC have made a great terrain kit here and you can see why they have smashed through their target on kickstarter.
The Kickstarter has 2 weeks to go so with 10 different pledge levels on offer there is something for everyone who is in the hunt for some new terrain for their table top.
