Review: DMB Games Dungeon In A Box Subscription Box 1

Today on the blog I have a review of a new monthly subscription box from DMB Games called Dungeon in a box.

DMB Games specialise in making all sorts for keen adventurers such as dungeon tiles and accessories sets and even provide a painting service if you want your dungeon ready to play out of the box.

DMB Games were kind enough to send me over their very first edition of there new subscription box.

  Let’s take a look inside.

The first thing you notice about the package is the weight of the box as this box is full of hand cast resin pieces.

PDFs

In the box you are first greeted with a welcoming letter to the subscription services but that’s not all you  as there are links to 3 PDFs.

Included in the PDFs is a scenario for you to use with the contents of the box and will be part of a monthly story that will build with each new box delivered.
Having a ready made scenario to use with the content is a really good idea as it shows thought and care has gone into the contents of this box and is a great start for new players who can grab their favourite dungeon crawler rule set and get started in a ready made adventure.

There is also further information about the subscription box and the future going forward with upcoming plans for new PDFs each month which will feature new scenarios, encounters, area maps, and more of a glimpse into the world of Rosebyrne where the the scenarios are set.

So what do you get in the box I hear you cry well let’s take a look.

In this box I received
Floor Tile
4x 2x2 and 1x 4x4

Wall Tiles
1x 4.5 Block Wall
1x 4 Block Wall
1x 2.5 Block Wall
1x 2 Block Wall
2x Corner Walls

Doors
1x Dungeon Archway
1x Dungeon Door

6x Treasure Chest

What dungeon is complete with out some treasure chest and there is plenty given in this box to dot around in your new dungeon but that’s not all your get to fill your dungeon.

In this box you have the added bonus from DMB Games of an extra two accessory packs including some pillars and some very useful dungeon accessories which will be very helpful to fill your new dungeon.

The floor tiles, doors and walls all feel solid and look like what a classic dungeon should be.
I did notice that there are some bubbles in the casts such as in the doors and tiles and there is some some clean up required on the accessories but for me that’s not a big deal as most kits need some kind of attention in this way.

Painting this dungeon set looks like it will be nice project as the walls and floors all have nice raised edges.  I can see with a base coat, dry brush and a few washes theses will be ready to go perfect for beginner painters or anyone who wants to get their new dungeon on the table quickly.

Subscribing

If you chose to subscribe to the Dungeon In a Box you can choose the style of floor tiles you receive from Cracked Flagstone, Fieldstone, Ruined stone and Natural stone as well as the walls which can be either Gothic or Flagstone.
I am not sure if you can change the style of walls and tiles each month but at least you have a choice at the start to make you new dungeon look to your tastes.

There are two ways you can subscribe either monthly at the current price of £30 plus p&p or get a discount for paying for a quarterly subscription which works out at £25 plus p&p at the time of writing.

Over the 12 months of a subscription all the tiles will add up to DMB Games core tile set (which is available on their web site) with extras.  DMB Games have advertises that If subscribers pay monthly you can expect to receive over £20 worth of free tiles and accessories across the 12 months plus all the extras. If subscribers decided to pay quarterly you will get the additional discount on the price of the box ( £25 per box) and can get up to £75 worth of free tiles across the first 12 months.
So there is a lot of potential savings if you subscribe.

My Thoughts

So who is this Subscription for? Well for me its partly for existing players of D&D and other dungeon crawler games who are looking to add to or build their own dungeon but this is really well placed for anyone who wants to get started in dungeon crawling as each month you slowly get more and more accessories walls, floor tiles and new scenarios to try.
This box set could even be a good place to start for a gaming group who want to start their own adventures and use the contents of this box and future boxes.

The price of £30 plus PP (not including the discount if you buy quarterly) and the ability to chose the style of floor tiles and walls seems to be a fair price considering all the extras that are advertised subscribers will receive over the months and year.
If you look at the market place now a single miniature can be set around £30+ and in these boxes you getting to build a dungeon and can follow a narrative story.

Like many other resin kits this will require a bit of cleaning and possibly filling before painting but nothing I would consider too bad or unfixable.
The floor tiles and walls all feel heavy duty and I can tell you from experience I accidentally dropped the 4x4 floor tile on to a hard wood floor and there was no damage to it.

I like the idea and the thought that has gone into this box. It has enough contents and extra terrain pieces to give you a painting project with out over whelming you and with the additions of scenarios which use the contents of the box makes it a good jumping off point for new adventurers as well as seasoned adventurers too.
