Painting and Hobby: My Start in Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game Part 2

So in my last post I managed to paint 24 Mordor Orcs, 24 men of Minas Tirith and Theoden Mounted and on foot.

Now it was on to focusing on some single miniatures and get these finished so I can start on the Pelennor Fields box.

Painting and Hobby: My Start in Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game Part 1

Over the last few months I have been getting back into the swing of painting again.

It all started from trying to find a project to get me started and well after my annual Lord of The Rings marathon it gave me an idea to get on and paint some LOTR miniatures that have been on the to do list and thought this would make a great project.

SELWG 2022 Gaming Show

I have been away for a while and just recently come back to social media etc as a lot has been going on for the past few months personally so the hobby has taken the back seat for a bit.

The last few weeks I have started to clear my hobby space and sort through a few things and looking through my timeline by just chance I stumbled across a gaming show called SELWG which was happing over the weekend and was very close to me.

So I could not say no and popped along to Lee Vally Sports Center in London and decided to take a look.

Painting & Hobby: Mines Of Moria Terrain & Moria Goblins

As you may have seen in my Battle Of Balin's Tomb review (you can read this here) I added some of the Mines of Moria terrain to the gaming board to make it more 3D.

I also added 22 Moria Goblins instead of the 12 in the box as I had some extra and thought the game could do with  more to get that horde feel.

Let's take a look.

Review: Lord Of The Rings Battle In Balin's Tomb

20 years ago Peter Jackson released the first film in his trilogy for Lord of The Rings The Fellowship of The Ring.
Around this time Games Workshop released a miniatures game based on the new film.

In celebration of 20 years of the film Games Workshop have released a new board game/miniatures game which is based on one of the famous scenes in The Fellowship of The Ring The Battle in Balin's Tomb.

Let’s Take a Look.

Hobby Update: Something Awesome Happened This Week!

Well I have been a bit busy I am sorry to say so no battle report from the badlands this week but you will get a double helping of battle reports next week!

Instead this week I got some time to paint and wanted to paint a few differnt things just to mix it up a bit.

I looked to my random miniatures shelf for inspiration for this task and decided on these miniatures.

Trolls...

This week I went back to the well or should I say tin that has been the gift that has kept on giving. The big tin I found of minis in the charity shop.

I went for some of the big guys this week.

first up was a Cave Troll from LOTR which needed a tidy as well as it being striped of its Airfix paint which took a few hours. After the clean up it was a quick re sprayed and started work. It does seem some time in its life the chain snapped and it looks like a glue gun was used to put it back together but never mind.

Next up was another troll but this was a big metal beast. I am not sure the name of this troll from LOTR but it was on a rally beaten up base and was heavily covered in a thick glop of paint and needed to be dipped for a few days. it had at least 3 layers of paint on it.

Going for a dip.

After it was striped of paint I went about making a chain wipp from some chaos rhino parts and under coated the troll black.

still not fully clean

As I had to try and cover some sins of the previous paint job and I wanted to try out the Typhus Corrosion and Ryza Rust I thought it would be a good chance to try and nurgle up or make this troll look old an nasty.

I started off by painting the armour in chain mail silver and the skin in Rakarth flesh and the cloth in Knarloc green and added a wash of Agraxearth shade. I am trying to get that dirty look but theres a fine line between a dirty look which works to where it just looks a mess.

After using the rust and corrosion effects which work really great I added some of the chain mail silver to try and get a chipped effect.

Overall this was an experimental paint job to see how the paints worked together and from what I learnt I can see this being used on any future nurgle minis or if I want to make any industrial bases or terrain.

Another good thing about this is now I have 2 trolls to play with and I think now there are only 2 riders of Rohan and then all of the LOTR figures I got from the tin are finished.

Frostgrave Update Pt 2

My target was to get my minis finished as quick as possible to start Frostgrave this year. That target is now complete.

The mighty wizard and his apprentice are already assembling a might war band to enter the ruins of the frozen city in the hope to find hidden treasure and secrets it my have within its walls.

The Gang

The Wizard And His Apprentice

The Boys Are Back In Town

Bow Bro's

Scrim's The Name Treasure Huntings The Game With His Old Pal Burt

Thieving Hobbits!

There you have it my collection of war band members. I tried to make sure I had enough characters to fill all the slots I my need and maybe some could do double duty.

Now all I have to do is choose the wizards discipline and I am ready to go.

Winter is coming.....

In the last post I said I ended the year looking at Frostgrave. After reading the rules and getting excited with Mr2key we are starting on our war bands. I have put Deadzone painting on the back burner for now but they undercoated and ready to be played I promise.

Now I am trying to do this on the cheap so I am trying to find fantasy figures that I may have picked up here and there. I don't usually play fantasy at all really so luckily that charity shop tin I found a while ago has lots of Lord Of The Rings minis and they have come up trumps... I knew I kept them for something.

So here are the first 3 minis I have painted so far and my first painted minis of 2016.

I am still working out what models can fill the gaps in my warband. The cunning eyed would have seen that I have used the the 2015 Salute free mini for my bow man. I was not sure what I was going to get to use him but now seems the perfect opportunity.

I think I am going to have to raid some board games I have to fill the gaps for my thugs and apprentice etc.. I have loads of monsters so this is going to be great excuse to paint them all...

Also I got this in preparation..

Walking around the sales in Debenhams I found this. The best bit it was under £20! I was told after I got this a few Frostgrave players had seen this on offer and snapped this up over Christmas.

Right I am off to see how far I can get with finishing my war band. Hopefully I can get them all painted quickly and get them ready for a good fight.

Are GW Returning To Their Old Games?

A poster popped up this morning around the web and on forums introducing a new Specialist Design Studio from Games Workshop. This Studio will be specialising in GW's older game systems such As Blood Bowl, Mordheim, Battle Fleet Gothic and even handling The Lord Of The Rings.

With Total War Hammer and Mordheim games coming out soon on PC and the fact that this has taken GW a long time to support these games is it a little to late or will the legions of fans still playing these games be rejoicing?

There's a lots of games already out there at the moment that have the flavour and style of these older GW games. So the question is are GW trying to make a quick buck on these old IP's or will they fully support theses systems?  This will be one of the big sticking points for gamers as well as the price point as the market is getting cheaper.

Also what happens to the living rule books for games such as Blood Bowl will these become obsolete as GW rewrites the rules of their games to feel more up to date? Will these be limited addition games?

Time will tell what GW will do with this new studio as well as how they carry on with Lord Of The Rings. If GW can pull this off right this could be a very successful move.

What do you think?
