Review: Acid House Terrain Portable Sci Fi Wargame Terrain

As gamers we all have the aged old problem of having enough space for our miniatures and storage space for all our terrain. Not only that carrying terrain around to gaming clubs or your friends house can be a hassle.

Well if you are playing Sci Fi games and are short on space I may have a portable solution for all your terrain needs.

Acid House Terrains Portable Sci Fi Wargame Terrain is a card based terrain system that is easy built and packed away and only takes up the space of a board game.

After their successful first print run Acid House Terrain are back on Kickstarter with the second print run.

Acid House Terrain has kindly sent over a box for me to review so lets take a look inside the box.

On first inspection the box has a nice slip cover that shows you all the contents you receive in the box with information that you can visit their web site to help with the building of this terrain as there is no instructions in the box but to be honest as you will see its all pretty straight forward to build from the colour code and number system which you will see later in the review.

The box that I kindly received from Acid House Terrain says 25% this is important as this system is designed to expand to the size you require.

This 25% box which makes a 60x80cm gaming board as you will see is perfectly sized for games such as Warhammer 40k, Kill team , Infinity etc

Once the slip cover is off you have a nice card board box which is the size of standard board games nowadays which goes with the easy of travel element of this product.

In side you are presented with lots of card board and envelopes that has some of the smaller bits of terrain and connecters with spares to clip the boards together.

There are 4 double sided boards in this box that can make a horizontal style board or on the flip side there is a futuristic industrial floor.

All 4 boards together for the 45° angle board.

This is the other side with all 4 boards together

The card board is nice and thick with a shine that is plastified so any accidental spills of drinks will be easily wiped up.

In this box you get 4 Double sided gaming boards, 10 Board joints, 2 Big buildings, 2 Medium buildings, 2 Small buildings, 2 Bridges, 2 Acid high tanks, 2 Telecom access points,2 Pipe control points, 2 Ventilation shafts and the storage box.

Here are some pictures of all the contents close up so you can see all details and quality of the print.

The Bridges

The Acid High Tanks

These are the Ventilation Shafts and the Telecom Access points.

The Small Buildings

These are the Medium Buildings

The Big Buildings

Just looking at the terrain you can see all the hard work that has gone into the design, art work and print quality.

The bridges which are thiner card and use two small squares of card that look like extractor fans keep the bridge ridged and is surprisingly sturdy and can take a fair bit of weight.

All the buildings seem to be able to take a far bit of weight so your large heavy miniatures should be safe.

As you can see the inserts for each buildings are made of thicker card to help keep the shape and strength of the buildings.

So let's see all of the terrain set up.

This first board set up I put on the horizontal 45° angle which gives a dynamic element to the terrain and to you game.

As you can see just from this set there are plenty of places to hide and explore with plenty of hight to give your games a nice multi level experience.

To build this table it took me take less then 5 mins and thats one of the key features of this terrain its quick to set up and play as well as to pack away after your games.

As I said earlier there are no instructions but it's easy to work out what buildings and inserts go together due to the number on each building and the corresponding colour that is on each building and insert.

The next board set up I set up the length ways on the other side of the board.

If you looking for a bigger board AcId House Terrain has you covered as I said this is only a 25% box but with the full box you get 12 double sided floor tiles and make 3 60x80cm boards, 2 60x120cm or 1 80x120cm board and 1 60x80cm boards and when all is put together this make a full 4x4 board so plenty of options if you have a few of you playing.

You will also get 8 of every building, scatter terrain and bridges and 40 clips to connect your boards.

So my thoughts.

On first impressions just looking at the box I was impressed at how all the terrain stated on the box art fitted nicely in a box that was no more then the size of a board game even the bigger 100% box is about roughly the size of the Necromunda Dark Up rising Box.

You can tell that Acid House terrain have really worked hard on the design of this terrain from the way you don't really need instructions due to the colour coding of the buildings to adding the plastic coating to the card is a great idea which will hopefully help keep the terrain from any damage form liquids.

The inserts used are made of tougher card stock when placed in each building frame make aa nice sturdy structure which should support most heavy miniatures you have.

Not only that all the the art work is great. The colour and vibrancy of each piece really helps the terrain to stand out on the tabletop.

The modular system is a really useful for gamers as if you have a 25% box to start you know you can get  another set in the future and add this to your existing terrain with no problems.

Also with the 100% box you get lots options for table sizes which is great if you wanted to have a few of you playing a campaign or even differnt games due to the set up options.

This would be an ideal salutation for a gaming club as you could get a few sets and be able to cover a number of tables and games.

I would like to see Acid House Terrain expand this range in the future with small scatter terrain pieces and maybe some more buildings and structures to maybe in a more industrial grim dark feel maybe.

Also for those of you that are looking for Fantasy style terrain I hear that Acid House Terrain are working on a modular style system as we speak which I am looking forward to seeing. So keep your eyes peeled for that.

I am impressed with Acid House Terrains attention to detail, art design and the creative options you have with this product. Its perfect to take with you to your friends or gaming club with a very quick set up and pack up time and does not take too much space if storage is an issue.
