Review: Bag Of Dungeon By Gunpowder Studios

Today on the blog I have a new adventure for you in the form of a dungeon crawler thats perfect for beginners and veteran players, with enough flexibility to make it as easy or challenging as you like and small enough to travel with.

Are you ready?

Let's delve into Bag of Dungeon.

Bag of Dungeon is based around a tile laying system that makes each game unique allowing up to 4 players (includes a solo mode) to play with 4 classes of heroes each having their own unique stat cards.  In the game you can play as either a male or female Fighter, Healer, Dwarf or Elf.

Inside the box you get.

A copy of the easy to follow rules.

8 thick card stock tokens and tile cards including the Dragon Token.

Wooden player and cubes to track you abilities and movement in the dungeon.

The Magic Ring token and 4 Wooden Dice.

Dragon Scroll cards which are used to give extra adventures and challenges in your games.

Hero cards for both male and female heroes.

All the tokens punched out and ready to play

There are also 3 bags that will make easy work to transport all the tokens and tiles for the game if you don't want to take the relatively small box with you.

As I mentioned before you can play this game solo or with up to 3 other players.
Each player will select a hero and start on the start tile and  in turns will use a number of Action Point (AP) to lay tiles, move, uses items and fight.

The aim of the game is to collect the Magic Ring witch will be guarded by a random monster once the last dungeon tile is laid and then it's off to defeat the Dragon before you exit the dungeon.

Once the ring has been collected it's a race against time as soon as the Dragon is defeated and the hero with the ring leaves though the exit tile the dungeon starts to collapse.

The remaining heroes have one turn to escape or be buried alive.

When you lay tiles randomly to form the dungeon some will have differnt symbols for example if you see a red M that means a monster will spawn on that spot.
There are green item symbols that if a hero walks on to that tile they can pick an item from the items bag but beware that some items are traps.

There is also a healing pool tile that when passed through your hero is back up to full health.

In the dungeon you will no doubt come across some horrible monsters and you will find your self in combat.
Combat is a simple dice rolling exercise. You roll the number of dice shown on your character card and add weapon and other modifiers as shown on the card or items.

Then the monster rolls off adding any of its modifiers.
The lower scoring opponent takes damage equal to the score difference.

You keep doing this until one of you are dead or if the hero decides to run away causing one automatic wound and will allow the monster to regain full health if you don't have any means to attack it at range in that turn.

As the hero you can cause a critical hit on a double which doubles your score and you can still add modifiers.

If you find a monster too challenging and need help you can tag other player to use their hero to help. This adds another dice to your attack but does cost AP and if a player wants they can refuse to help.

At the end of the combat if the hero wins you can take a number of items depending on how much health points that monster has. So the more difficult to beat the more reward if you win.

If a hero loses all their health the hero loses a life. If thats the last life the adventure is over and all the items collected are left on the tile for another hero to pick up.

Other than close combat attacks you can cast spells and make long ranged attacks. This can be handy in the dungeon as if there is clear line to a monster token you can attempt to shot a bow or cast a spell from distance but it must be in the correct distance for that bow or spell for it to work but this can cost you number of AP.

As you lay down tiles the exit tile with the Dragon Token can appear at any time but you must get the Magic Ring before a hero can leave which only appears when the last tile is laid.
Where the Magic Ring ends up is on determined on dice roll.

Be warned the Dragon will be a fearsome foe and will need skill and courage to defeat it.

Playing Solo

After a quick read of the main rules and the additional solo rules I picked two heroes and I was off on my first adventure.

I found playing the game a lot fun in solo mode there was enough there to keep me busy.

Just by playing my first game I can see how the flexibility of the game will create a lot of fun for plays by   adding or taking away items and monsters to fit your needs. You can even shorten the amount of dungeon tiles  which will allow for longer or shorter game times.
Perfect for that quick game at a gaming club or before dinner.

Talking of making things more challenging in the box there are additional advanced rules for a more competitive play as well as the Dragon Scroll cards that add new quest, monsters and items.
Some additional rules can make monsters rush you after a range attack or make it that range attacks can harm other heroes in you way of a monster leading to more competitive play especially if you are after a certain item another hero has.
There is even Freds Lucky Dip stall where you can trade items in the dungeon.

All of this adds another layer to the game so as you get used to the rules and want further challenges this will help continue to breath new life in to each new game.

There is also nothing stopping you swapping out the wooden figures and using some of your own miniatures and adding these to the game.

You can even create you own hero with the free blank hero card on the Gunpowder Studios website which could be fun for you or younger players.

As you can see here 28mm miniatures work perfectly.

My thoughts.

Bag of Dungeon is a great beginner friendly introduction to a dungeon crawling style game.
The rules have been well thought out and they don't overwhelm you with things you need to do or remember.
It's small foot print and travel size is perfect to take away on trips or play at home.

The games ability to be flexible in the amount of players and how difficult or challenging you want it to be is great as it will grow with you as you get more used to the game and will be appealing to most gamers.

The additions in the box of Dragon Scroll cards for extra items , monsters and quest is another great part of this games design.

I like that the fact the game does not have to be played cooperatively with other players as it allows for back stabbing and skulduggery which is perfect to add a competitive edge to the game.

There is also enough room in the rules to make this game fit your personalty and play style too.

For example there are blank monster cards and item cards so players can make their own additions to add to the dungeon.

Gunpowders Studios have not only got all this contents in this relatively small box to expend the game there are more heroes cards, item cards and Dragon Scroll cards which you can download for free on their website.

You can download a Halfling and a Minotaur along with a Wizard who has magic spells and best of all the blank card to make your own unique hero.

I have to congratulate the team at Gunpowder Studios in designing a simple to learn but yet expandable game that is only limited to a players imagination and will be great for families, game nights and solo adventures.

If you are looking for a dungeon crawler that is easy to play does not take up a lot of room to play and has   the ability to grow with your imagination then I recommend you check out Bag of Dungeon.
